The 2026 MLB season is upon us.
While there will be 11 games on Thursday, March 26, which is generally considered "Opening Day," the season will actually start the night before. The New York Yankees will begin the year across the country, taking on the San Francisco Giants on "Opening Night" on Wednesday, March 25.
The Yankees are coming off a 94-68 season, and are largely running it back with the same team that got them to the 2025 ALDS, where they fell to the Toronto Blue Jays, who eventually went to the World Series. New York is favored to win the AL East, but a lot can happen over the course of a 162-game season, and the Yankees will have to stay healthy with both Carlos Rodon and Gerrit Cole starting the season on the IL.
The Giants missed the playoffs last season after finishing an even .500 with an 81-81 record. San Francisco's biggest offseason additions include Harrison Bader and Luis Arraez, who should help add consistency to the lineup. The Giants are still projected to struggle this season, given how good the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres are expected to be in the NL West.

Yankees vs. Giants live updates, highlights from 2026 MLB season opener
All times ET.
Bottom of the fifth
9:51 p.m. -- The Giants' current strategy to have the fastest possible innings when they are batting is not panning out for them. Bailey grounded out to second, Bader popped out to second and Arraez grounded out to first as San Francisco saw nine total pitches.
Yankees 7, Giants 0
Top of the fifth
9:47 p.m. -- After a rough second inning, it felt like only a matter of time before Webb got hit again and it came in the fifth inning. Bellinger singled to right, and Rice singled to center. Stanton had an RBI single to center field. Chisholm grounded into a fielder's choice, but was safe at first after an error that allowed Rice to score. Stanton was out at second for the first out.
Caballero popped out to second, but Chisholm stole second. McMahon then struck out to end the inning. Webb will likely be done for the sixth.
Bottom of the fourth
9:37 p.m. -- Adames started the inning by flying out to center, and he was followed by Lee, who also flew out to center. Ramos hit a single becoming the first Giants player to reach base in two innings. Schmitt then grounded into a fielder's choice to end the inning.
Top of the fourth
9:29 p.m. -- Caballero grounded out to third. It is worth noting that during his at-bat, we did have the first ever official ABS challenge. A strike was called, but Caballero challenged it, and it was confirmed to be a strike.
McMahon drew a walk and Wells singled to center. Grisham flew out to center. Webb then got Judge to strike out for the third time in the game and the Giants starter got out of the two-out jam.
Bottom of the third
9:17 p.m. -- The Giants bats stayed cold in the third. Arraez grounded out to first, Chapman flied out to left and Devers grounded out to short in a fast inning.
Top of the third
9:10 p.m. -- The Giants left Webb in the game, and he got the bounce-back inning he needed with a quick 1-2-3 frame. Rice struck out looking, Stanton grounded out to second and Chisholm rolled over to first.
Bottom of the second
9:06 p.m. -- Heliot Ramos began the bottom of the inning, striking out. Casey Schmitt was hit by a pitch, but no harm came from it as Patrick Bailey and Harrison Bader struck out to quickly end the inning.
Yankees 5, Giants 0
Top of the second
8:55 p.m. -- Ben Rice began the second inning, grounding out to second. Giancarlo Stanton singled to center for the Yankees' first hit of the game. Webb then hit Jazz Chisholm Jr. on the next pitch, and the pitch caught him in the ribs. Jose Caballero got the scoring started as he doubled to left, scoring Stanton.

Ryan McMahon kept it going with a single that scored both Chisholm and Caballero.

Austin Wells singled to center, moving McMahon to second. Grisham then sent a ball into triples alley, scoring McMahon and Wells.

Judge struck out looking for the second out, and Bellinger struck out swinging to finally end the top half of the inning.
Bottom of the first
8:42 p.m. -- Max Fried began the home half of the first by walking Luis Arraez on four pitches. Matt Chapman grounded out to shortstop, but the Yankees only got Arraez at second as Chapman beat out the throw to first.
Rafael Devers hit a weak fly ball into center field. Gresham lost it in the sun, and it fell in front of him. Devers was safe at first, and Chapman reached first safely. Fried struck out Willy Adames for the second out of the inning. Jung Hoo Lee hit a hard grounder to second base, but Jazz Chisholm threw him out at first to end the inning.
Top of the first
8:32 p.m. -- The game began with Logan Webb pitching to Trent Grisham. The first out of the game came from Webb, who notched his first strikeout of the season. Aaron Judge worked a full count, but he also struck out. Bellinger flew out to left to end the inning.
It was a good inning for Webb, but given that it is his first start of the regular season, it could be noteworthy that he threw 17 pitches in the first.
Pre-game
8:15 p.m. -- The lineups have been announced, and first pitch is upcoming from Oracle Park.
7:20 p.m. -- The Yankees are largely running back the same roster for the 2026 season. It will be interesting to see how Boone manages the lineup if the Giants go to a lefty out of the pen. New York is starting a very lefty-heavy lineup against the right-handed Webb.
7:00 p.m. -- The pre-game show on Netflix is live. Anthony Rizzo, Albert Pujols and Barry Bonds are expected to join host Elle Duncan to preview the game as well as the 2026 MLB season.
6:48 p.m. -- Luis Arraez had offers to join other teams in free agency, but the Giants were the one team that was going to let him play second base. Other teams wanted him to play first, but Arraez gets to be San Francisco's everyday second baseman, and he is even leading off on Opening Day.
6:30 p.m. -- Yankees manager Aaron Boone made the decision to bat reigning MVP Aaron Judge second in the Opening Day lineup. Judge will be followed by Cody Bellinger and Ben Rice, giving him plenty of protection in the lineup. Judge struggled in the back end of the World Baseball Classic, but will look to get right with the season starting.
6:00 p.m. -- Webb appeared in two starts for Team USA during the World Baseball Classic and will look to sustain that momentum into his Opening Day start for the Giants. He started 34 games last season and had a 15-11 record with a 3.22 ERA. The San Francisco ace struck out 224 batters, the third-most in MLB, in 207 innings.
5:45 p.m. -- Fried will be making his first Opening Day for the Yankees since signing with the franchise ahead of the 2025 season. The southpaw pitched in 32 games last year and tallied a career-best 19-5 record. He added a 2.86 ERA and struck out 189 batters in 195.1 innings of work.
5:30 p.m. -- The game will be broadcast on Netflix. As such, the platform is integrating its other content into the game's production. The first pitch is expected to be delivered by Thing from the show "Wednesday." It was expected to be a CGI first pitch, but pre-game, a Thing replica was seen waving from a skateboard while travelling the infield.
