Young cowgirls, cowboys compete in Corning

Dozens of young cowboys and cowgirls converged at the Clark Park Rodeo Grounds on May 31 for the 43nd annual Corning Jr. Rodeo where competition was strong and outcomes celebrated.

The day started with slack and then the grand entrance at 2 p.m., kicking off competition such as bronc riding, calf riding, barrel racing, pole bending, team roping, breakaway roping and much more.

Overseeing the day's events was the newly crowned Corning Jr. Rodeo Queen Brooklynn Ross, 15, the daughter of Levi and Dannette Ross. Ross was crowned during the rodeo’s queen competition on May 29. Crowned First Runner-Up was Tessa French, 16, of Los Molinos and Second Runner-Up was Hailey Scharer, 13, of Lowery.

The next day, May 30 was the rodeo’s mixer, which saw the crowning of Little Miss Rodeo Juniper Edwardson, 3, Most Original was 4-year-old Harper Brown, Working Cowgirl was Emery Brewer, 5, and Best Dressed 14-month-old Irie Grimes.

Crowned Jr. Rodeo Queen was Cadence Alexander, First Runner-up Ellie Wammack and Second Runner-up Blake Mason.

Not leaving the boys out, going home with the title of Champion Lil’ Rodeo Clown was Betty Cohn, Man-in-a-Can was Kase Burnette and Most Authentic Zachary Grimes and Mr. Congeniality was Weston Edwardson.

The mixer was also home to other competitions, such as Goat Undecorating, which was won by Sofie Grootvelt and Weston Edwardson; Stick Horse Barrel Racing won by Sofie Grootveld and Kase Burnette; and Dummy Roping won by Weis McFann and Dawson McFann.

One of the rodeo’s crowd favorites, Mutton’ Bustin’, was won by Weis McFann and Jocelyn Welfing.

During the rodeo competition, earning the title of All Around Jr. Cowboy was Clint Earley, and Liberty Prosser going home as the All Around Jr. Cowgirl. Tucker Martson won the All Around Sr. Cowboy title and Teegan Hill won All Around Sr. Cowgirl.
