No. 9 FSU softball's late rally spoiled in walk-off loss at Stanford

No. 9 Florida State softball let a late lead slip away.

The Seminoles scored six runs in the top of the seventh inning Friday night but were undone in the final moments, falling 9-8 to Stanford on a walk-off grand slam at Stanford Softball Stadium.

FSU dropped to 36-5 overall and 12-1 in ACC play, suffering its first league loss of the season and ending its 25-game winning streak. Stanford improved to 24-12 and 10-6 in the ACC.

The Seminoles fell behind early after Stanford scored twice in the bottom of the first inning off Ashtyn Danley. Danley answered for herself in the second, launching a leadoff solo home run to pull FSU within one.

After that, both teams’ pitchers settled in. The game remained tight through the middle innings, which were interrupted by a 39-minute rain delay.

FSU broke through again in the sixth inning using two-out hitting. Anna Hinde doubled, and Kennedy Harp followed with a single to score pinch runner Madi Frey and tie the game.

Stanford countered in the bottom of the inning with a three-run home run to regain the lead, taking a 5-2 advantage into the seventh.

The Seminoles mounted a dramatic rally in the final frame. Hayley Griggs opened the inning with a double, and Jaysoni Beachum and Isa Torres drew consecutive walks. Marin Heller was hit by a pitch to force in a run.

Danley delivered again in the clutch, ripping a bases-clearing double to give Florida State the lead. Angelee Bueno crossed the plate on a wild pitch, and Bella Ruggiero added an RBI single as the Seminoles surged ahead 8-5.

The late lead, however, did not hold. Stanford loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh and ended the game with a grand slam.
